The reason that I decided to run as a Republican for Newton Illinois City council is that I am
trying to create some interest in city politics, this year is unusual in their is actually 1 contested
race, most years there are no contested races. I would like to see a Democrat, Republican
and a independent candidate running for every office every time. I would like to see a public
forum where these candidates could explain their positions and answer questions from the
public and ask questions of their opponents, the United States is a Representative Republic
and this is how it is supposed to work.

While I would like to see more interest and more contested races the current Mayor and
council do not want to see more interest and would like to keep it where any openings are filled
by someone who they recruit.

Also, when I ran for city council in 2007 (I won) my opponent and the rest of the city council
were running under the "Peoples Party" i ran as a "independent". Now that the entire city
council and mayor have followed my lead and are now running as independents I decided that
it was time to move on to something different and run as a Republican.

This was only possible because
Dr. Bloomberg helped open the way for national level parties
to run for local office. He thought it was a great idea in 2005 but
not now.
